A man has been arrested on suspicion of snatching handbags from women in Birmingham and punching one of his pregnant victims in the stomach.

The 35-year-old was detained at his home address in Oldbury yesterday (25 Feb) by officers investigating street robberies in Smethwick, Harborne and his home town.

The snatches happened in North Western Road, Smethwick, at 10pm on 18 February; Foley Street in Wednesbury just before midday on 24 February; and two attacks in Harborne within 90 minutes on 22 February.

The first saw a woman bravely cling onto her handbag when a thief tried yanking it from her shoulder in Harborne High Street at around 8pm.

But later that night it’s suspected the same man punched a pregnant woman in the stomach as she waited for a bus in Vivian Road before making off with her bag.

In between the two Harborne robberies a woman also reported her bag having been stolen by a man in Halesowen Street, Oldbury.

The suspect remains in police custody on suspicion of robbery, attempted robbery and theft.
