An elderly woman has died after being hit by a lamppost in a horror crash. The 77-year-old pedestrian was rushed to hospital after the two-car collision in Liverpool city centre this afternoon.  She was hit and injured by a lamppost which apparently fell following the crash between a silver Vauxhall Meriva and a Seat Leon. She sustained a serious head injury and was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

Another pedestrian – a 51-year-old woman – was also taken to hospital following the collision at around 2.50pm. She remains in hospital, where she is being treated for minor injuries. Eyewitnesses said they believed the two pedestrians who were injured in the tragedy to be a mum and daughter. Police said the pair were wounded by a lamppost.

Police said the crash, which occurred on The Strand at its junction with Georges Dock Way, damaged a lamppost at traffic lights. A 36-year-old woman from Watford has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
