A British woman has died on the Portuguese island of Madeira after falling 100metres from a hiking path. The victim, who has not been identified, was on a trail in the scenic area of Levada do Norte when she slipped and fell in front of her horrified husband.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene just after 11.30am on Saturday but she could not be saved. The 43-year-old woman was said to be an experienced hiker and had visited the trial before, it was reported.
On the Facebook page for local TV channel RTP Madeira, one reader commented: “I’ve done that route but it’s dangerous! You don’t have protections. The regional government should put balconies at least in areas with chasms, throughout this journey, urgently.”
