A 22 year-old woman has been killed while attempting to save her dog from the tracks on a level crossing.
British Transport Police are investigating the accident, which is not being treated as suspicious, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
The emergency services were called to Fisherman’s level crossing, which is situated between Freshfield and Ainsdale in Lancashire, just before 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The woman, who was from Glastonbury in Somerset, was pronounced dead at the scene and it is thought that her dog was also killed in the accident. Her next of kin have been informed.
A local newsagent, Kanesh Saran, from Freshfield, said: “People say that it’s a dangerous spot. Dogs can get underneath the gate and walk under it. That’s where the problem started. She has gone through the gate to protect the dog which was on the track and then been hit – it’s very, very sad.”
The tragedy led to severe disruption on services between nearby Southport and Hunts Cross for several hours yesterday, with a bus service in operation.
