Police responded to an address in Lychgate Court in Oldham after the baby was found “unresponsive” by paramedics.

The infant, described as “barely three weeks old” was rushed to the Royal Oldham Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. A 55 year-old woman, who is a relation of the dead child, was arrested in connection with the baby’s death.

Detective Inspector Dave Moores is in charge of the investigation into the baby’s death. He said: “This is an absolutely tragic case in which a baby who is barely three weeks old has died. Any death of a baby is always extremely upsetting and keenly felt by family members and even the wider community.

“An investigation is underway and we are committed to identifying how and why this baby died. We also have officers supporting family members at what is clearly a very distressing time for them.”
