A robber stormed a bank on a university campus and took terrified workers hostage at gunpoint today.

The gunman held several employees hostage at Alabama Credit Union in Tuscaloosa, US, on a University of Alabama campus. Horrified witnesses said an armed SWAT team surrounded the site with drawn guns. Students were warned to stay away from university, which was put on lockdown, and businesses nearby were evacuated.

It is unclear how many people were inside the credit union when the gunman stormed it. But around two hours after he did so, police detained him and freed the traumatised members of staff.
