Two children are in hospital fighting for their lives after a car smashed through a barrier and overturned near a bridge. The youngsters, aged 13 and 11, are in a critical condition at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary after the accident near the Redheugh Bridge, Gateshead.

Three adults were also injured in the accident, which took place on the A184 in Gateshead at 6pm on Tuesday.  Shocking pictures show the hatchback on its roof after crashing through a barrier. The car was carrying three adults and two children and all passengers were taken to hospital. The adults’ injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police were called to the incident by an off-duty paramedic. The bridge was closed to motorists for more than three-and-a-half hours while police cleared the scene and carried out investigations. Police and fire crews were called along with five ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team, a trauma paramedic, a cardiac arrest paramedic and a support unit from the Great North Air Ambulance.
