At least people have been killed with more feared dead after 14 carriages of a train derailed in one of the worst disasters of its kind.
More than 150 people are believed to have been injured in the derailment, which happened early this morning, with many still trapped in the wreckage. Fourteen carriages of the train derailed near the town of Pukhrayan in India, according to officials.
Emergency services rushed to the scene along as workers pulled bodies out from the twisted carriages. A senior railway official said: “Still many more passengers are trapped.” India’s railway system is the world’s fourth largest but it has a poor safety record, with thousands of people dying in accidents every year.
Suresh Prabhu, India’s Railways Minister, said in a tweet the government would immediately investigate the causes of the derailment and promised those responsible will face the “strictest possible action”.
