A heartbroken mum has told of the tragic moment she woke to find her two-month-old baby dead by her side. Melissa Watkin began screaming when she noticed her two-month-old daughter Sophia’s face had turned blue, having fallen asleep on the sofa after a night-time feed.
The mum from east Hull says the loss of Sofia Watkin-Dent has “destroyed” her life. Melissa had fallen asleep on the sofa at her home, with Sophia safely tucked into her travel cot. When Sophia woke up in the early hours, Melissa got up to feed her and after getting her daughter settled on a cushion by her side, the mum then also fell asleep on the sofa. Tragically, when she awoke, she discovered her “brilliant baby” was unresponsive after wriggling over in the middle of the night.
An ambulance was called while the pair frantically gave their daughter CPR. Paramedics then took Sophia to Hull Royal Infirmary but doctors could not revive her. In a statement read out on behalf of Melisssa Watkin during the inquest at Hull Coroners Court , she said: “I feel like it has destroyed my life and I don’t have a life anymore. I am just a shell of the person I was.”
