Further information about the tragic death of Bristol mum Charlotte Bevan has been released by police.
Charlotte left Bristol Maternity Hospital with her newborn baby girl Zaani at 9pm on Tuesday evening. Following a desperate search, Charlotte’s body was discovered late yesterday evening and formally identified today.
The body of a baby was discovered today when a walker spotted a pair of hospital slippers and a baby’s blanket over the side of a cliff in Bristol.
Upon further investigation, the body of a 6 day-old baby girl was found on the side of a cliff next to Clifton Suspension Bridge. Charlotte’s body had been discovered in the gorge beneath the suspension bridge.
Although police have not officially confirmed the body is that of Zaani, they have released a statement: “We can confirm that the body of a baby girl has been found at the search site at the Avon Gorge. Although formal identification has not yet taken place, we are confident this is the body of five-day-old Zaani Tiana Bevan Malbrouck.”
This afternoon, Charlotte’s mother, Rachel Fortune, released a statement; she said: “My beautiful daughter and grand-daughter are now at peace. The family would like to thank all the friends of Pascal, Charlotte and Zaani, some of whom we have only met today.
“We would also like to say thank you for all the messages from everyone. We wish to thank all the hospital staff at St Michael’s and the mental healthcare team, past and present. The response and support from the public has been overwhelming and we would like to thank you all.
“We would also like to give our thanks to Avon and Somerset police and the volunteers from Avon Search and Rescue. We thank the press for their help and ask that we now be left in peace to grieve.”
Bristol Maternity Hospital has launched an investigation to ascertain how Charlotte, 30, was able to walk out of the hospital, with her baby, unchallenged.
It has been reported that Charlotte had stopped taking prescribed medication for depression in order to be able to breastfeed her daughter. Allegedly, she suffered from schizophrenia and had also suffered extreme sleep deprivation after the birth of her daughter at the weekend.
