An international footballer has been killed after being shot in Panama. Amilcar Henriquez, 33, was found murdered in the city of Colón on Saturday, police said. Two others, Josemar Pedro and Delano Wilson, were also injured in the attack and are now in hospital.

Henriquez was an experienced midfielder who had recently returned to the club where he made his breakthrough Árabe Unido. He won 75 international caps for Panama. The attack happened near the footballer’s home in Nuevo Colón. Witnesses said a red Nissan was seen in the area before the attacker got out of the vehicle and fired various times at Henriquez and his companions.

Clubs, players and journalists paid tribute to Henriquez after hearing the shocking news. The Panama Football Association tweeted: “We deeply regret the death of international player Amílcar Henríquez. God receives your soul Mickey”
