Five young people are dead following a crash with a wrong-way driver police said. The teenagers were all riding in one car when a man driving the wrong way on an interstate highway in Vermont crashed into them.
The chaos started just before midnight, investigators said, with 911 callers reporting a wrong-way driver in a pickup truck barreling north in the southbound lane of Interstate 89 in Bolton.
Soon after the initial reports were filed, that truck crashed into a small sedan in Williston, police said. That vehicle ended up in the median and burst into flames. State Police said the five teens in the car died at the scene.
The co-principal of Harwood Union High School, in Duxbury, said four of the five teenagers were juniors there. She said the fifth was also a junior but at a different school. She called the deaths “an unprecedented tragedy” and said all five were vibrant members of the community with bright futures.
