It is suspected that the a mechanical failure caused the Jeep that was pulling the wagon to lose control, sending it crashing down a hill and spinning into a tree.

The driver of the Jeep and a teenager remain in hospital and their condition is described as “critical.” The teenager who was killed died overnight in hospital.

The accident occurred at Harvest Hills Farm in Mechanic Falls in Maine and was part of the “Gauntlet Haunted Night Ride”. Although all mechanical amusement rides are required by law in Maine to be inspected by state fire marshals, hay rides are exempt from this scrutiny.
