Ajax have confirmed Abdelhak Nouri has suffered severe and permanent brain damage after collapsing during a friendly on Saturday. The 20-year-old fell to the ground approximately 70 minutes into the game against Werder Bremen.
Medical services rushed to Nouri’s aid where CPR was reportedly administered, before he was airlifted to hospital in Innsbruck. Nouri was put into intensive care where results have shown that his brain is not functioning and there is a lack of oxygen supply. A club statement said his chances of recovery from the damage is nil.
Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar said: “This is the worst possible message. It’s terrible. We feel enormously with his parents, siblings and other relatives … Abdelhak is such a great talent, but unfortunately we will never know how far this star would have reached had this not happened.”
