A champion student rower who was celebrating winning a bronze medal at the World University Championships in Poland has died after a “freak” accident.Ailish Sheehan died in hospital on Friday, five days after the fall, with her family at her bedside. She was being treated in Poznan, having been in a coma since the incident last Sunday.
Sheehan, who was born in Limerick and was competing with the University of London, had suffered a broken arm and a fractured skull. She was out celebrating after winning bronze as part of the British women’s four crew team.
A spokesman for British Universities and College Sport said: “Ailish was involved in a serious accident. The circumstances of the accident remain unclear and are likely to do so for some time to come.”
Ailish had previously won a gold medal at the British Universities Championship.
