Saira Khan broke down in tears on Loose Women earlier today after revealing she was sexually abused by a family member when she was 13-years-old. When speaking about Bono being included on US magazine Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year, Saira spoke of a Pakistani woman called Mukthar Mai who she felt should have been Woman of the Year.
Mukthar was gang raped by a group of men in 2002 in her remote village in Punjab as a form of honour revenge, and has since been an advocate for women’s rights, which saw her front a fashion show on Wednesday to appear as a “sign of strength”.
The Celebrity Big Brother star was then in tears as she revealed that a male family member had abused her, before she got up from her chair left the set during the live broadcast. “I’ve never talked about this before, but, any woman who goes through… at 13-years-old, a male member of my family – he has died now – came in to my bedroom and did things. I would never have talked about this but I felt I had to.”
Fellow Loose Women panelist Anne Diamond, Linda Robson and Nadia Sawalha comforted Saira. “Please, this women is a voice for every women in the world and she inspired me to talk about something that is wrong. If any young child or woman is going through something where somebody is touching them, without their permission, inapropriately… Please, it is wrong. Go and get some help.”
