A crazed fanatic has killed one soldier and left another critically injured in a brutal attack.
25 year-old Martin Couture-Rouleau used his car as a deadly weapon, slamming into two soldiers yesterday before driving off, claiming the deaths as victory for Allah and bragging about 9/11. One soldier was in uniform, on in plain clothes. The attack happened at about 11.30am in the town of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, about 40km from Montreal.
The killer fled at speed and was pursued by police; he lost control of his car, spinning into a ditch. At this point, witnesses say that Couture-Rouleau climbed from the wrecked vehicle and charged at the police officers, brandishing a knife.
The police officers fired and shot the killer dead. One witness reported: “I heard [police officers] shout several times, ‘Get out of the car, get out of the car and raise your hands.’ The man got out and charged towards the policewoman. Then that’s when we heard seven gunshots, then the man was on the ground.”
Authorities have revealed that Couture-Rouleau was a known radical who had been posting anti-West pro-Terror diatribes online.
A spokesman for the Surete du Quebec police force confirmed that officers were investigating if the soldiers had been specifically targeted, possibly due to the Canadian government’s decision to send six fighter jets to participate in the US-led campaign against ISIS militants in Iraq.
