A police officer is to be investigated over an incident in which he took a selfie as a tormented individual prepared to leap to his death.
While the policeman’s colleagues were desperately trying to talk the man down from the bridge, he was busy using his mobile phone to snap a selfie for his own self-amusement.
The 35 year-old man, named locally as Sadrettin Saskın was said to have been struggling financially and been beset my money woes. Despite efforts to get him to change is mind, he committed suicide, plunged from the bridge in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, a drop of nearly 600ft.
A spokesman for the local police, Maksud Calik, said: “It was his third suicide attempt. Highly trained negotiators were trying to talk him into coming back onto the bridge when he suddenly let go and fell. A full investigation into the officer’s conduct is ongoing. Any breach of duty identified will be disciplined.”
Social media has slammed the obvious selfie-taking officer; one critic commented: “It was at best insensitive and at worst criminally negligent.”
