Thousands of holiday-makers trying to grab some Autumn sunshine found themselves stranded as seven inches of rain fell in just 12 hours on the popular holiday island of Tenerife.
Authorities warned tourists to stay in side for their own safety as flood water raged on the island.
One British woman was killed in Santa Cruz when she was trapped in a car that was swept away by flood waters; she suffered a heart attack in the incident and died.
Many roads were closed as flood water reached several feet in height, leaving cars submerged and properties suffering extensive damage.
Flood water rushed with such ferocity down road that tarmac was torn from the roads. Police warned people to stay away from the deluge and not to drive unless absolutely essential.
