A nine-year old girl was killed when a fun day at the beach turned into a family tragedy.
Isabel Grace Franks was enjoying a day out at the beach with her family. She was digging a hole in sand on the beach and when it got to about five feet in depth it collapsed, covering Isabel in a weight of sand and leaving her unable to breathe.
Paramedics were called to the scene on the Oregon beach and Isabel’s family and bystaders attempted to frantically dig her out. Isabel was buried for five minutes and when she was pulled from the sand the ambulance crew tried to revive her, before transporting her to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City. Despite efforts to revive her, Isabel, who was from Sandy in Oregon, died an hour later.
One witness, Tracey Dudley, told CNN reporters: “We heard screaming from the beach. At first we thought it was just kids playing, but then it was screaming, screaming, screaming.”
Sergeant Brian Eskridge of the Lincoln Police Department told NBC News: “This is a horrific accident. Any time you’ve got a sand structure, if they dig, there’s the potential someone can get trapped in it.”
