Detective Inspector Nick Connaughton, of Blackpool CID who is heading up the murder investigation said: “This is a tragic situation where a young girl has lost her fight for life. We are now treating this sad death as suspicious and are investigating just how the child came into difficulties in the pool.”

A spokesman for the Dalmeny Hotel, which overlooks the beach at St Annes and has approximately 100 rooms, declined to comment on the girl’s death or the circumstances surrounding it. The Dalmeny Hotel is described as a “family-friendly resort” and boasts a heated indoor pool and spa as well as three restaurants.
