A mother has been jailed after she left three young children unattended in a house with smashed windows and barely any food as she slept off a hangover. The youngsters were left to play barefoot, stepping over broken bottles and cans all over the floor, while Carly Aldred snoozed upstairs, a court heard.
Aldred was looking after the children when police were called to her home around 11am on March 11 after the window was smashed. When officers arrived they grew concerned for the welfare of the children after one of them answered the door wearing just a pyjama top. It took officers ten minutes to wake the 29-year-old from her intoxicated state.
She sobbed in the dock as a judge told her she was “clearly extremely drunk” and exposed the children to “real danger”. The mother, from Droylsden, Manchester, was handed a 16-week prison sentence after pleading guilty to three counts of neglect. She blamed medication she was taking for making her “drowsy,” but prosecution cited the children running around without shoes, and that there was no food in the house except a packet of cereal and some peas.
