A young mother has admitted to killing her two children by suffocating them with plastic bags.
24 year-old Sonya Spoon has been arrested on two charges of first-degree murder after paramedics found two unconscious children in her home in the early hours of Sunday morning. Both children were rushed to a children’s hospital in Washington, but died just a few hours later.
The police arrested Spoon for the murder of one year-old Ayden Spoon and Kayla Thompson, aged three and said that she waived her right to silence after the arrest, telling the police she had killed the children.
The police issued a statement about the children, stating: “Both victims were found to be in distress and experiencing difficulty breathing. Officers located evidence of foul play which was readily apparent in the home.
“[Spoon] provided a very detailed statement implicating her involvement in the death of her children. As a result [Spoon] was charged with two counts of first degree murder. Bags were placed over the children’s heads – we are still exploring what the motive was at this time.”
Spoon, who had previously used social networking sites to post pictures of her children and express her love for them, appears to be smirking in the police mugshot. She will be remanded in police custody until her trial.
