A mum-of-five says she is considering amputation after she claims she was bitten by the UK’s most venomous spider while in hospital. Gemma Hunter, 41, has revealed she was left in agony after her foot swelled just days after a false widow sank its teeth into her twice. The bite created a 3cm deep hole in her right foot which became infected with cellulitis – a disease linked to meningitis.
Eight months after the encounter, Gemma has lost her job and been served an eviction notice from her home because the wound has not yet healed. The former lollipop lady, from Rossendale, Lancashire., just “wants her life back” and is considering requesting docs amputate her “zombie foot”. The false widow, a relative of the deadly black widow, is the only venomous spider native to England and bites typically feel like a bee or wasp sting.Fed-up Gemma said: “It has affected my whole life and I lost my job as a school crossing patrol. I have never owed money in my life and this is the first time I have been in debt. I owe £1,600 in rent. I want to provide for my children but when there is no rent coming in and I’m receiving an eviction notice it’s quite scary … If it continues to carry on then I might consider getting the ankle down taken off. It’s just causing me constant pain everyday.”
