A former naval officer has been run down and murdered by thieves stealing his car in the middle of the night as he attempted to stop them. Police have launched a murder investigation after Michael Samwell, 35, died this morning following the shocking incident.

Officers were were called to an address on Cranbourne Road in Chorlton, Manchester, at 3am this morning. Police say that the residents at the house, Mr Samwell and his wife Jessica, were awoken by a loud bang downstairs. Mr Samwell went down to see what was happening and shortly afterwards shouting was heard from the rear of the property.

He was then found in the parking area at the rear of the address with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time later. Police say it appears that Michael was run over by the vehicle, causing his injuries and the stolen Audi was found abandoned earlier today. Police are appealing for information.
