A troubled junior doctor was found dead at a hospital where he worked after he reportedly killed himself. The medic, named locally as Tom Oakland, is understood to have been discovered in the doctors’ academy building at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton on Monday night.

Colleagues were first on the scene before police were called; the “sudden death” has been referred to a coroner. The Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust said it had been supporting the man before his death but is now asking the question “if this support was all that we could possibly have given”. A message reportedly sent to staff said the junior doctor, who was in his 30s, had “apparently taken his own life”.

One colleague posted: “Tom, very sorry we couldn’t help you. Will always remember your wry smile. I think your death will teach us all to look out for colleagues in trouble in future; something which will stay with me forever. Thanks for the laughs! Matthew.”
