A man on holiday managed to capture a once-in-a-lifetime event when he filmed Mount Tavurvur erupting.
Phil McNamara was enjoying a scenic boat trip and filming the volcano across the lake, when it suddenly erupted, belching a tower of smoke into the air and sending debris flying. The shock wave can be seen emanating from the volcano through the clouds.
The footage also captures the sonic boom slamming into the boat and making everything shudder.
Mount Tavurvur is the most unstable volcano in the area. Located in Papua New Guinea, it erupted so violently in 1994 that nearly half the nearby city of Rabaul was destroyed.
Following this spectacular explosion, which Mr McNamara summed up as “Holy smokin’ Toledos!” Mount Tavurvur rumbled on for several days, before eventually subsiding.
