The motorway is one of the busiest in Gloucestershire and has been closed southbound after a lorry was involved in a crash with a caravan and several cars between junction 14 and junction 15. Two lanes are currently closed with emergency services at the scene.
There are already reports of queues stretching back six miles as 24 tonnes of organic has spilled over the carriageway. One vehicle has gone into the embankment and the large lorry involved will require specialist recovery. The lorry is believed to have been carrying organic flour from local firm Shipton Mill.
Traffic is already queuing back to junction 12 as motorists are being advised to use other routes. Drivers stuck in the huge delays have called for more to be done to prevent accidents on the stretch of road. Sean Everett wrote on Twitter: “Something needs to be done, this is getting to be a recurring event on the M5 with lorries overturning.”
