A “series of controlled explosions” have been carried out at Manchester Airport after it was evacuated this morning. Terminal 3 at the airport was cleared shortly before 10am and bomb disposal experts called after a suspicious bag was spotted.
Manchester Airport tweeted: “Due to a potential issue with a bag in Terminal Three, a precautionary evacuation is taking place while further investigations take place”. Pictures emerged of hundreds of people stranded on the tarmac next to rows of planes, and others left standing on stairs and in other terminals.
At midday reports of a controlled explosion was confirmed by Greater Manchester Police and a spokeswoman confirmed the suspicious bag was a piece of hand luggage.
