A “series of controlled explosions” have been carried out at Manchester Airport after it was evacuated this morning. Terminal 3 at the airport was cleared shortly before 10am and bomb disposal experts called after a suspicious bag was spotted.

Manchester Airport tweeted: “Due to a potential issue with a bag in Terminal Three, a precautionary evacuation is taking place while further investigations take place”. ¬†Pictures emerged of hundreds of people stranded on the tarmac next to rows of planes, and others left standing on stairs and in other terminals.

At midday reports of a controlled explosion was confirmed by Greater Manchester Police and a spokeswoman confirmed the suspicious bag was a piece of hand luggage.
