A couple who escaped from the 21st floor of Grenfell tower lost their unborn baby son as his mother lay in an induced coma. Marcio and his seven-month-pregnant wife Andreia Gomes, together with their two young daughters had escaped the burning building where at least 80 people have been killed. After getting out Mrs Gomes lay unconscious and gave birth to a stillborn child. The pair had already named him Logan Isaac. Mr Gomes said doctors told him Logan’s heart had stopped and he needed to be delivered so his wife would not contract an infection. He said: “My wife gave birth that night while she was in an induced coma so she didn’t know at the time. At 11.03 in the evening my baby boy was born.

“I was holding him, he looked peaceful, like a baby that was just sleeping. I wanted to be there with him but he had already died.” Mr Gomes said he had to tell his wife what had happened when she came around – describing the situation as ‘very emotional’.

Mr Gomes wrapped his family in wet towels as the fire surged up the building and led his family down the stairwell. As they reached the lower levels he noticed eldest daughter Luana, 12, had not made it after being rendered unconscious by smoke. He left his wife and daughter Megan, 10, and ran back through the tower to carry her down.
