A man with a gun is holding a woman hostage in Greater Manchester after locking himself in a house and “cutting the gas pipes”, according to witnesses. Armed police are currently swarming suburban streets in Oldham with the area on lockdown.
A 50m cordon has been put in place and neighbours were evacuated after being woken by polie at 6am. Engineers are now attempting to isolate the gas supply as police negotiators try to talk down the armed man. The Fire Brigade and the national grid also on scene.
A young child and a baby were also in the house when police were originally called 3.15am, but they are now safely out of the property, according to reporters. A neighbour said he heard arguing in the home at about 3am and that some three hours later police started the evacuation. A fire crew is on standby at the scene and there are reports of lots of police activity in an alley at the rear of the properties.
