The American actor and stand-up comedian Robin Williams has been found dead at his home in California in what appears to be suicide.
Police in Marin County have issued a statement confirming Williams was pronounced dead at his home shortly after emergency services responded to an emergency call at about midday local time: “At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.”
Williams, who was 63 when he died, starred in The World According To Garp, Good Morning Vietnam, Mrs Doubtfire and Dead Poets Society and won an Academy Award (Oscar) for his role in Good Will Hunting. He broke into the mainstream with his portrayal of zany alien Mork on the sitcom Happy Days and was so popular, he was given his own series, Mork & Mindy.
However, he had been “battling severe depression,” according to his publicist and Williams’s previous struggles with alcohol and drugs has been well-documented
Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider, issued a statement saying she was “utterly heartbroken:”
“On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
Williams leaves behind his wife and three children from previous marriages.
