A “huge fire” has been spotted close to London’s Heathrow Airport as pictures of the scene appeared on Twitter. A Twitter user posted a photo of a cloud of thick, black billowing smoke in the sky behind a hotel. The fire is not at the hotel, but reported to be at a Garden Centre close-by.
Other pictures showed clouds of smoke behind Terminal 5. A Heathrow spokesman confirmed that the fire will not affect any flights coming to and from the airport.
A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “Over 70 firefighters are tackling a fire at a garden centre on Holloway Lane in West Drayton. A large section of the two storey garden centre is alight and crews have put a 100 metre safety cordon around the incident.“Ten fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms are at the scene. Brigade Control officers received around 20 calls about the fire which is very visible and can be seen from a distance. The Brigade was called at 1633 and the cause of the fire is not known at this stage. “
