Back in April, it was revealed Dean Gaffney was going to be making a full-time return to EastEnders , 14 years after his character left for a new life in India. The actor, 39, was last seen in Walford as loveable Robbie two years ago, when he briefly appeared as part of the farewell plot for his mum Carol. But recently he returned for good, with a new job as the Albert Square market manager.
And while many fans of the BBC soap assumed he’d be accompanied by his faithful mutt, Wellard II, who replaced the original Wellard after his death on screen in 2015, the dog was nowhere to be seen. But in tonight’s episode, Sonia Fowler revealed the devastating news the dog was no more. Speaking to her grandma Dot Cotton, she said: “Robbie lost Wellard II a while back!”
EastEnders viewers were devastated by this news, taking to Twitter to vent their frustration. One said: “Oh no, Wellard II died as well.” Another added: “It’s not right Robbie being back on the Square without a dog. Bring on Wellard the Third!” A third sobbed: “Aww I miss Wellard.”
