A deadly spider with the ability to kill a human being has been discovered sitting on a garden fence.
The venomous Australian redback was found on a garden fence in Dartford in Kent. A local animal rescue centre was alerted and the spider with a potentially-fatal bite was taken away by staff from Artisan Rare Breeds, who are now caring for it.
The redback is one of the few spiders whose bite is seriously harmful and can be fatal to humans. Due to its preferred habitat being near dwellings, it is responsible for the majority of serious spider bites in its native Australia.
Redbacks usually prey on insects but also kill small rodents and lizards, which they consume by injecting venom into their victims before sucking out their liquefied insides.
The redback’s tolerance of cold means that it is able to colonise areas more temperate than Australia and sightings of the deadly arachnid are on the increase in the UK.
