A British woman has died in hospital after reportedly being beaten to death at her Gran Canaria home. Donna Cowley, 47, lost her fight for life in hospital, nearly 24 hours after the assault. An 80-year-old British man, named as James Breaks, is in custody.
He has been described locally as the woman’s partner and police say he is being held being on suspicion of undermining the authority of the law relating to an act of ‘active resistance’ at the Guardia Civil station in Puerto Rico. The assault believed to have resulted in her death is said to have occurred just after midnight on Friday at an apartment in the holiday resort of Puerto Rico in the south of Gran Canaria. She died in an island hospital later the same day.
The arrest happened at apartments called Apartamentos Bahia Azul. Local police reportedly found the man they later detained sat on the sofa watching the TV when they turned up, and the woman described locally as his partner bleeding in the bathroom due to the assault she had allegedly suffered. She was said to be fully conscious when they arrived on the scene.
