Riots are believed to have broken out at HMP Birmingham with officials reportedly losing control of an entire prison wing. Tornado squads – designed to bring riots under control – are believed to have been drafted in to help at the Victorian category B prison.
Trouble reportedly started at around 3.30pm when a number of inmates refused to go back into their cells. It is unclear whether anyone has been injured and unconfirmed reports have suggested that one wing has been “lost”.
A HM prison Service spokesperson told Sky News it is dealing with an “ongoing incident involving a small number of prisoners”. A G4S spokesman added: “We are working with colleagues from HM Prison and Probation Service to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.”
