An RAF jet had to be scrambled as a plane flying to Reykjavik made an emergency landing at Prestwick Airport.The Volaris XA-VLX flight is believed to have been en route from France, when it lost communication.
Four typhoons were launched from RAF Coningsby and Lossiemouth bases to escort the cargo plane to safety for operational reasons just after 3pm. Police and fire crews raced to the airport and surrounding roads were closed.
An Ayrshire Police Division statement said: “An aircraft has been diverted to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire around 1440 hours today, Friday 28 October 2016 following reports of a temporary loss of communication.
“A full emergency response has been put into action at the airport. The aircraft landed safely at 1557 hours. Emergency services are in attendance to establish the full circumstances.”
