Police have descended on Soho after a huge explosion was heard. Images have emerged on social media of the central London streets filled with officers from the police and fire brigade.
Pubs and offices have been emptied in the surrounding area after the “gas explosion”, according to officers. Panicked city workers took to Twitter in the immeditae aftermath. Stephen MacDonald tweeted: “OMG just had a gas explosion go off next to us in Soho!” Local reports say multiple roads are shut to pedestrians.
The explosion is believed to have been in the men’s toilets of the Windmill Club in Archer Street. A police spokesman said the blast was centred around Archer Street. The busy area of London’s West End has been surrounded by officers after the boom heard just after 6pm. Transport for London (TfL) said a “major emergency services incident” is ongoing.
