The Director of the FBI, James Comey, says that the Bureau has managed to identify the ISIS militant known as Jihadi John.
Islamic State left the world reeling when it released a graphic video showing the beheading of US journalist James Foley. The exeutioner was a man with a London accent, but was disguised so only his eyes could be seen.
Islamic State went on to kill two more hostages, US journalist Steven Sotloff and British aid worker David Haines. There are reportedly more hostages who have been threatened with execution and governments are frantically discussing the best course of action.
Mr Comey told reporters that he would not reveal the Jihadi John’s name or nationality, presumably for security reasons and also to prevent reprisals on the militant’s family.
Last month Britain’s Ambassador to the US, Peter Westmacott, said that the UK was near to identifying the Islamic State militant and that experts had been using sophisticated technology, including voice recognition software, in an effort to track him down.
