The man’s body was discovered at 7am this morning and emergency services were quickly on the scene. The police have erected a forensics tent between the swings and climbing frame at Gilbertstone Recreation Ground in Yardley, near Birmingham.

The park is cordoned off while evidence is gathered and photographs taken. One witness told the Birmingham Mail the death was a “shock”: “We have lived here for the last three months and although there is always groups of youths hanging around we have never had any real problems. It has come as quite a shock.”

Another witness gave details of the operation currently happening: “The tent scene is actually in the playground – it looks like it is on the play equipment – near the swings.

“About 10 police officers are at the scene, two forensic officers and the main investigating officer. There is nobody else about. It is quite shocking to wake up to this. It’s a nice play area used by a lot of local kids.”
