A video has been released by an Algerian jihadist group which appears to show the beheading of French tourist Herve Gourdel who was seized in Algeria on Sunday.
The news comes shortly after warnings by Islamic State militants on Sunday that they would be targeting Americans and people of other Western nationalities, “especially the spiteful and filthy French.” It is believed the French were particularly singled out for joining the US in carrying out air strikes on IS targets in Iraq.
55 year-old Herve Gourdel was snatched on Sunday while he was in an unsettled part of the North-East Kabylie area.
After Mr Gourdel’s capture, the Algerian militant group Jund al-Khilafa issued threats saying that they would kill him if France did not immediately halt air strikes on Iraq. They issued a 24-hour deadline and it is believed thy decapitated Mr Gourdel after its expiry.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius confirmed that a video released after Mr Gourdel’s capture that showed him surrounded by armed militants was genuine. Mr Fabius said that France would do everything it could to free Mr Gourdel, but admitted that the situation was “extremely critical.”
