A huge blaze has broken out near Barcelona–El Prat Airport this afternoon with reports the fire broke out near a warehouse. Pictures quickly emerged on social media showing thick plumes of black smoke billowing above the Spanish airport just after 5pm.
The cause of the blaze remains unclear. An airport source said that flights have been affected by the incident, affecting those flying home after yesterday’s terrorist attack. One runway out of three has been closed as a result causing delays to flights.
Several people have tweeted pictures from the scene showing smoke towering over the runway. Witnesses say the fire broke out at a nearby warehouse. In a tweet, Spanish airport controllers said: “In Barcelona we operate single track 25L because of fire in the vicinity affecting the approach to runway 25R. #SafetyFirst #Delays.”
