The Pride of Canterbury left Dover early this morning bound for Calais. She was carrying 337 passengers and was just off the coast of Northern France when the fire was discovered.

The blaze broke out in the engine room of the ferry at approximately 8am UK time. The resultant fire alam sounded across the ship and and passengers were forced to scramble on to the deck.

Witnesses reported that enormous plumes of acrid, black smoke have been seen billowing from the engine room and up into the air.
