The M6 was closed at Stafford

Armed police shut the M6 this afternoon in a firearm-related drama.

The M6 in the West Midlands was temporarily suspended on the Northbound stretch between J13 for Stafford South and J14 for Stafford North.

The armed police swooped and arrested four men on suspicion of possession of a firearm. The men were also arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. This second charge follows what officers described as an “incident” that occurred in the Northamptonshire area earlier today.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Police said: “Those arrested have been taken to custody in Staffordshire and will be questioned later. Officers want to thanks the drivers on the M6 this morning for their cooperation whilst they experienced a short delay to their journey.

“The deployment of armed officers during incidents like this are carefully considered and the safety of the wider public, our officers and the occupants of the vehicle is paramount in these situations. The motorway opened within a few minutes and the incident was resolved quickly and safely.”
