Approximately 500 people have been evacuated in London due to explosion fears as a fire ripped through a garage. Nearly 60 firefighters on the scene battling the blaze at the workshop in Watling Avenue in the Burnt Oak area of Edgware.

London Fire Brigade said an exclusion zone had been set up because of fears that gas cylinders might explode. The whole of Watling Avenue has been closed and black smoke rises into the sky. Burnt Oak Tube station has also been closed – along with a number of businesses.

Mark Odling, 31, who lives in Burnt Oak, told the Standard: “I came out and saw and I saw big, black plumes of smoke filling the streets. It was mayhem, very mad. We kept getting moved back by the police. I heard a small explosion, a pop so, I think that’s why the police were concerned with getting everyone back as quick as they could.”
