A man has died after attempting a base jump from the side of cliffs in Ireland. He had just watched a friend do the same jump successfully, but when it came to his jump something went wrong, and he crashed onto the rocks 700 feet below.
It’s not clear what led to the jump going wrong – whether the parachute failed to open at all or if it opened too late to cushion the impact. Three men had gone to the Aill Na Searrach, part of the Cliffs of Moher range, to do the jump early yesterday morning. The third, who was watching from the top, called for an ambulance after seeing it go badly wrong.
A lifeboat from the Doolin Coast Guard responded to get close enough to the base of the cliffs to try to help them. The man was flown to Galway University Hospital but was pronounced dead.
