A four month-old baby has been left brain-dead after her parents gave him crystal meth in an attempt to stop her crying.
Her parents are now facing prison while their daughter languishes on a hospital life support machine; doctors describe her condition as “clinically dead.”
The parents of the baby, Silvia Strnadova and her husband Miroslav, aged 26 and 30 respectively, were arrested after they brought the unconscious youngster into a local hospital. A hospital spokesman said: “They came into the waiting room with the unconscious baby in a pram and demanded to see a doctor. When we carried out checks it became apparent the child was in a critical state and had been given a strong dosage of drugs.”
The doctor in charge of the infant’s treatment, Anna Moracikova, said: “The child’s brain is severely damaged and she is clinically dead. Her chances of survival are minimal and she is being kept alive by a life support machine.”
A police spokesman in the town of Prievidza in the North-Western Slovak region of Horna Nitrawere, said: “The man admitted giving the baby the meth in order to stop him crying. He has been arrested for neglect and for causing harm to a minor. That may change if the child dies. He is in custody, while the woman has for the time being been released. We are still investigating her for failing to stop her partner giving the child the drug.”
Neighbours of the couple said they were were well-known drug users, with the baby’s father, Miroslav, known locally as “The Crocodile” due to his skills in crystal meth cooking as well as his bad temper.
A neighbour, 36 year-old Jana Trznikova, said: “Really weird people kept going to their apartment. I always worried about letting my children play outside because you never knew what would happen. She’s well-known for not settling down and already has two other children with different men. They should never have been allowed to keep that poor baby.”
