A baby boy had to be delivered by emergency Caesarean section after his pregnant mother was shot in the face.
The little boy, who is now fighting for his life in hospital, was not due to be born until next month. His mother, who had two other children, was looking after a friend’s daughter at the time of the murder. She was was sitting with an unidentified man outside a house in the Frankford area of Philadelphia on Sunday morning, when a gunman driving the wrong way down the road opened fire.
Police believe the gunman was aiming for a nearby man, but missed shooting 26 year-old Megan Doto in the cheek, just before midday. Emergency services rushed Megan to hospital where doctors were unable to save her, but by delivering the baby by emergency c-section, there were able to save his life. The little boy remains in a critical condition and friends say she was planning to call him Carmine Joseph.
A spokesman for the Philadelphia Police, Police Captain Stephen Murianka, said: “It’s a horrific circumstance. She was not the intended target; she was just unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Police are searching for a white car that was spotted leaving the scene of the murder.
