A 15-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in Sunderland, police have said.The teenager was hit while riding a motorbike. The incident happened in Hewitt Avenue in the city at 8.40 on Wednesday evening. The boy is being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Northumbria Police said a 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Officers said they believed it to have been an isolated incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Ord said: “We recognise this incident may be concerning for the local community and I would like to reassure them that there is no wider risk to members of the public.
“We have two people arrested who are currently in custody and our inquiries are continuing. Extra officers will remain in the area to answer any concerns local residents may have.”
